In-Class Activity: Research and Creative Application of Music Production Techniques

During this session, you’ll work in small groups to explore innovative music production techniques. You will begin with research and then apply your chosen technique creatively. Follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Form groups of 3-4 colleagues.
  • Step 2: Research a specific music production technique. Investigate its historical context, key features, tools, practical applications, limitations, and innovative examples. Look into how artists have used it to shape their sound.
  • Step 3: Choose one technique to apply in your project. Here are some options:
    • Recording random sounds from your environment and using them as rhythmic or melodic elements.
    • Creating a song from a single sound using techniques like sampling or audio effects (e.g., reverb, distortion).
    • Sampling and chopping existing audio to reimagine it in a new way.
    • Layering effects to transform a simple sound into something unique.
    • Using MIDI automation or probability tools to generate variation in your loops or melodies.
    • Exploring granular synthesis to create new textures and soundscapes.
  • Step 4: Experiment with your chosen technique and create a short concept or musical idea using your DAW.
